Pragmatics refers to the social aspect of communication that we use everyday. We convey our thoughts and feelings with social communication using conversational turn-taking, body language, eye contact, appropriately assessing the environment, and more. Children who struggle with pragmatic skills may have difficulty with the following:
-Conversational turn-taking
-Maintaining the conversation topic
-Reading body language, facial expressions, and nonverbal cues from others
-Understanding abstract ideas during social exchanges or within a text
-Leaving out relevant background information during conversations
Speech and language therapy may be beneficial if your child is experiencing any of the above during social exchanges across various environments. Treatment will focus on personal areas of need to enhance functional communication skills and social growth.
