Expressive language refers to the way we communicate with others. This can be verbal or nonverbal. Expressive language is vital to our daily lives as we use it to convey our wants, needs, and ideas with others. Children may have an expressive language delay if:
-They use a limited vocabulary for their age
-They seem to have difficulty expressing their needs and wants even though they seem to understand others
-They struggle to form complex utterances such as longer sentences in conversation
Receptive language refers to what we process and understand. The ability to comprehend spoken and written language, and gestures is necessary to develop functional, academic, and social skills throughout life. Children who are experiencing the following difficulties may display a receptive language delay:
-Understanding age-appropriate vocabulary
-Following directions at home and in school
-Answering "WH" questions (who, what, when, where, why and how)
-Turn-taking during conversations
Speech and language therapy can boost your child's expressive and receptive language skills to promote age-appropriate communication across various area of language. Treatment is unique to each child as it targets individual areas of concern.
