As children grow, they enter various stages of speech and language development. These stages are often categorized into expressive language and receptive language. Expressive language is what your child communicates to you either verbally or nonverbally (gestures or signing). Receptive language is what your child processes and understands. Sometimes young children need support in one or both of these areas to meet their speech and language needs.
Typical Development:
12-15 months: 1-5 words
18 months: 10-50 words
24 months: 50-300 words
36 months: 1,000 words
If your child is having difficulty meeting the above developmental language milestones, then he or she may benefit from a speech and language evaluation. An individualized treatment plan will be created to target various goals developed based on his or her areas of need.
